My name is Natalie Szczur. My husband Matt and I were married November 21, 2014, in a beautiful church ceremony in Old City, Philadelphia, surrounded by all of our closest family and friends. I often look at the picture of us kissing in the middle of Broad Street with Philadelphia City Hall as our backdrop, rush hour traffic buzzing by, the bustling city fading into the background.
I wish I could freeze that moment where time was still–the two of us standing as one, taking in the world before us. A moment where we firmly planted our feet on the ground and let out a long, soft exhale. Because our life together, in the best, most exciting way possible, is not very frozen. Our reality is we are never in one place long enough. Some may say this is no way to live. I say it is the only way to live.
If you’ve found your way to my blog, chances are you’ve probably heard of my husband Matt. He is a professional baseball player, playing for the 2016 World Series Champion Chicago Cubs and the San Diego Padres, among other organizations. I could list at least a page full of his accomplishments, awards and accolades, but the one you really need to most know about ironically has nothing to do with baseball, but more with the the kindness in Matt’s heart. Among all the craziness and high tempo, fast-paced lifestyle of a college dreamer almost-turned-pro-athlete, he found time to place someone else’s needs above his own by donating his bone marrow to save a baby girl’s life in her battle with Leukemia.
There’s more to life than just baseball, he says. He is right. Baseball continues to be very good to us. It blesses our lives in many ways one could only dream and hope, my personal highlights being meeting lifelong friends and having the opportunity to experience the country. We cherish this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and soak up every second of it because we both know it won’t last forever. Baseball is but a chapter in the story of our lives, and we now get to take our son along for the ride with us.
This blog is my baby, along with the newest addition of our son Matthew. It is my safe-haven. Told completely from my perspective, it is the story of my life as a normal college kid, continuing through graduate school and spanning until now. On this blog I will share my thoughts, activities, stories and personal experiences of my life and the life of my husband, and what it’s truly like to be a baseball family, through the ups, the downs, the good and the bad. This blog is a chance for readers to get to know my family beyond the scope of a baseball diamond.
I invite you and anyone else reading to step into our world and join us for the duration of our journey. It’s sure to be a good one.
